So after obsessing over plants, trees and nature in general this year, I got myself focused and produced a series of four DVDs for The Gnomon Workshop on how to create natural environments with Maya. With over thirty hours of lecture, they are intense and in-depth, and will hopefully help a wider range of 3D artists delve into this awesome category of work. While many of you may think that creating this type of work is 'hard', it is really a matter of dedicating the time to master the tools in a methodical and efficient way. Granted, it is a big commitment to do so, but if you are passionate about it, the time passes by in a blur and, before you know it, you are creating things that you did not think possible. I hope that the training I produce helps inspire people to take the plunge into the world of 3D, whether you want to work in film, games or any other industry where 3D has become a critical creative tool.

Getting StARTed
Had fun working with the DA crew last year at Comic Con San Diego, where they were doing short interviews with people while drawing... and they just posted mine (!). Very clever use of motion graphics. Honored to have been asked to participate... Hopefully some useful advice in there. I'm amazed that I seem to be making sense while totally being on the spot sketching with lights and cameras. Heh. Oi. :) Check out the other interviews here:
Mixamo
I’d heard of it… but not really paid much attention until a couple weeks ago when I stumbled upon Fuse in the Creative Cloud app. A few hours later and I made a quick animation using one of their stock characters with a mocap clip from their library. Being inspired by Beeple, who I also only discovered a few months ago, I ended up making a couple more anims just to see how quick I could turn them around. They’re only a couple hours of work each but pretty fun to do! Now to try Mixamo’s autorigger with my own models… (!)
Inktober, 2019
Decided to give Inktober a try for the first time... as I hadn't drawn for way too long. It was tough, specifically once I realized that this wasn't going to be a 20 minute/day exercise as I did with the first few. I began taking the time to think about the word prompt, do thumbnails, then pencil, ink and marker. Had varying amounts of time per day... some I surprised myself with and like a lot... some I really don't. But in the end - with 31 drawings in 31 days and probably @ 100 hours of work, I can say that my fear of drawing in ink is diminished. Bummed that the last one is meh... but Halloween prep beckoned! Hats off to the many others who inspired me with their awesome work this month. Music is Mogwai.
Forest Path
After two months of obsessing over plants, grass, trees and natural environments, I think I've got my workflow down. I am definitely impressed by how many polygons I can throw at Mental Ray. I've gone up to 700 million via instancing and 12 Billion via mr proxies, which only used 5gb of RAM of the 12gb on my system. crazy.
The scene started as a simple poly modeled landscape on which I then emit particles which get replaced via particle instancing with random variations of plants/trees from a library that I've been building using Maya paint effects and Onyx. Most of the plants along the edge of the path are manually placed instances. All mat

This would be a good buy when I'm done with my extra-solar earth's. It'd be cool to create some of the forests and landscapes. Can't wait to see more!
